JFRU chairman makes plea for sponsorship

first_imgChairman of the Jamaica Football Rugby Union (JFRU), Jerry Benswick, has issued a call for sponsorship of country’s male and female teams as they gear up for the next year’s HSBC World Series Sevens Tournament in Hong Kong. The tournament which usually attracts some of the best Rugby Sevens teams in the world, will be held from April 7-9.Benswick told The Gleaner that his association is looking to raise $5 million to help with the team’s preparations for the tournament.”We need sponsors now because our training has started, but we are going to kick into full gear come January and we need money right away to start this thing rolling,” said Benswick.”This is a world event and therefore the sponsors can get huge publicity from it because rugby is big all over the world and it is also big in the Caribbean,” he said.PROPER NUTRITION”We need sponsors for gears and so we are looking for people to come on board and help us with this because we want to take these teams as far as they can go,” Benswick said.He added that both teams will need proper nutrition if they are to compete at their best in Hong Kong.”We need a field with lights so that we can train at night’s 0during week. We have a relationship with the JDF (Jamaica Defence Force) so we get to train there (Up Park Camp) on Saturday, but we need three more training days each week,” he said.According to Benswick, Jamaica stands to benefit a lot from this tournament because the HSBC World Series of Sevens is one of the most recognised sporting events in the world. It’s a big deal for us,” he said. We have two teams going, our men also qualified because they came third in the tournament. There are only two Caribbean teams going to this tournament, Jamaica and Guyana.”This is a big stepping stone for most national teams because this is where you go to make your name. If you do well in Hong Kong then you get to continue on the circuit,” Benswick said.last_img
