Chicago Cubs rough up LA Dodgers rookie Julio Urias in 7-2 win

first_imgCHICAGO >> Throwing to a new catcher didn’t matter. Wearing a new number on the back of his jersey didn’t matter. A different media market in a different time zone, even the absence of his family in the bleachers — nothing Thursday could alter the fact that Julio Urias is simply not ready to be a major league pitcher. The cold truth played out on a warm day before 37,422 at Wrigley Field, as the Dodgers lost 7-2 to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs improved on baseball’s best record (37-15) by winning three of four games in the series, while the Dodgers (28-27) return home having won three and lost four on a seven-game road trip.Urias kicked off the trip Friday by failing to complete three innings against the New York Mets. He ended it with his first major league loss. For the Dodgers, the decision to give their top prospect a second chance presented a bit of a Catch-22: The only way anyone could know whether Urias would rebound in his second start was to give him a second start. When Urias was replaced by a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, the Dodgers trailed 6-1. After two starts, his ERA stands at 9.39. “Julio’s going to be just fine,” Roberts said reassuringly. “He’s going to be better.” It’s usually safe to bet on baseball’s top pitching prospect approaching his potential. In the moment, though, this trip forced the Dodgers to grapple with Urias’ learning curve while simultaneously measuring their championship hopes against two of baseball’s best teams. The Mets are the defending National League champions. The Cubs are the presumptive favorites this year. Of greater concern than Urias: The Dodgers scratched only eight runs and 16 hits over four games in Chicago.“Their starting pitching — you win with starting pitching and they’ve got it,” Roberts said of the Cubs. “The offense there’s always terrific. Guys are always getting on base. They slug. They have swagger.”It was this combination that exposed the gap between the best team in the majors and the best pitcher in Triple-A. Roberts did not commit to giving Urias another start in another five days, when the Dodgers host the Colorado Rockies. Ready or not, the Dodgers had little choice but to promote Urias after he threw 27 consecutive scoreless innings for their top affiliate and Alex Wood was sidelined with an elbow injury. Wood is expected to miss more than a month.Urias “has the most talent probably in this locker room,” Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson said. “I mean, he’s 19 years old. He can compete up here. That’s why he’s up here.”Thompson’s solo home run against Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks (4-4) gave the Dodgers their first run Thursday. Corey Seager’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning drove in Kiké Hernandez with the second run.The loss dropped the Dodgers 5 1/2 games behind the first-place San Francisco Giants — their largest deficit all season. Clayton Kershaw will take the ball Friday after being named the National League’s pitcher of the month. He’ll face the rebuilding Atlanta Braves at home, a simple formula for success for a team that could use one. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img To his credit, the 19-year-old left-hander rarely nibbled around the edges of the strike zone or overthrew catcher A.J. Ellis’ target. Both were problems in his debut, a game caught by Yasmani Grandal. Urias copped to being nervous in that game, which is understandable. His body language and composure on the mound were better Thursday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, but so was his opponent. The Cubs scored six runs against Urias — five were earned — on the strength of three laser-tagged home runs.Chicago was already ahead 2-0 when Javier Baez hit a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant hit home runs on consecutive pitches in the fifth. “I felt like my pitches were hitting their spots,” Urias said through an interpreter. “That’s what I liked about my outing.“It’s just those pitches I missed on, they were able to capitalize.”last_img read more

Miralem Pjanić the most expensive B&H Football Player of all Times

first_imgMidfielder of FC Roma is worth 35 million EUR, thus breaking the record of Edin Džeko who reached the price of 32 million EUR in February 2012, in the shirt of Manchester City.Miralem Pjanić is the most expensive B&H football player of all times! According to the German website Transfermarkt.de, midfielder of the B&H national A team is worth 35 million EUR as of yesterday, which is the highest market value of one B&H footballer.Pjanić’s price increased by five million in comparison to last year and he is currently on the division of the fourth position of the most expensive players of Serie A. experts from Transfermarks yesterday refreshed the page according to which Pjanić made the biggest progress of all B&H players. That is another proof that the B&H fantasist has an excellent semi-season behind him, at least when it comes to performances for the Roman club. Pjanić played 21 match in the fall part of the season, scoring nine goals and recording six assists (15 in Serie A – seven goals and five assists, 2 in the Champions League – two goals and one assist, and one in the Cup of Italy where he had no effect). For comparison, Pjanić’s price in the time when he arrived in Roma (September 2011) amounted to ten million EUR. Good performances for the Roman club increased the price to the B&H national team player year by year, and at this time last year he reached 30 million EUR, which was already enough to promote him to the most expensive B&H footballer. However, his price oscillated during the year, from 28 million EUR in March, then 24 million EUR in July, to 30 million in November, when the last evaluation in 2015 was made. Additional five million he got at the beginning of this year, as well as the interest shown by Real Madrid and Barcelona who started “a war” because of him, are just another proof that Pjanić is the most valuable exhibit in the B&H football set-out and that some of the teammates he shares the dressing room with during national team gatherings will hardly catch up with his market value.(Source: faktor.ba)last_img read more

Iowa Dems certify results of troubled presidential caucuses

first_imgDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Democratic Party central committee on Saturday certified the results of the 2020 presidential caucuses, nearly a month after a faulty mobile app and other problems delayed counting and prompted calls for Iowa to lose its status as the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest. The Iowa Democratic Party in a news release says the results now go to the Democratic National Committee, and the state party will continue to follow the rules and procedures outlined. On Thursday, the party released updated results after the completion of a recount requested by the campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg. Those results showed Buttigieg had 562.954 state delegate equivalents and Sanders had 562.021, out of 2,151 counted. That is a margin of 0.04 percentage points. The Associated Press opted not to call a winner, given remaining concerns about whether the results as reported by the party were fully accurate. The Feb. 3 caucuses were beset by technical glitches that led to a delay in reporting the results, inconsistencies in the numbers and no clear winner.Iowa awards 41 national delegates in its caucuses. Following Saturday’s certification, Buttigieg had 14 delegates and Sanders had 12. Elizabeth Warren won eight, Joe Biden won six and Amy Klobuchar won one.Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price resigned after the caucus fiasco, saying Democrats deserved better and that he bore responsibility for any failures. The state party selected Iowa state Rep. Mark Smith as his interim replacement.last_img read more
