Memories

first_imgLisa Gausman, present Batesville Boys and Girls track coach, brought over a box of track and cross country pictures and record books.   Memories of many of the years that I coached were in that box.  It brought back memories of the scissors kick in high jump, the long hair styles of that era, the cinder track, and names & faces that many of you might remember. One of the most interesting was the photo of the pit used for the high jump.  It was not one of the fancy ones produced by Gill, but old mattresses donated by Hillenbrand Industries piled on top of each other.  The bar was metal, not fiberglass like today. Some of the faces included Terry Giesting, father of current multiple record holder Chris Giesting.  There were also pictures of Dennis Dierckman who was one of our first cross country champions.  Dennis helped put Batesville on the map in cross country back in the late 60’s.  It also included names like Pete Schmidt, John Harmeyer, and David Galle. There were also photos from my years as head basketball coach, and pictures of the memorable 1971 team coached by Kirby Overman that many thought would win a state championship.  It was a fun afternoon reminiscing.last_img read more
