Nova Scotia Celebrates Seafood Export Success at Fisheries Conference

first_img Nova Scotia’s continued success with seafood exports is being celebrated today and tomorrow, Feb. 22 and 23, at an industry conference in Halifax. Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell will welcome fish harvesters, processors and industry suppliers to the 20th annual minister’s conference with the message that Nova Scotia’s seafood exports grew again in 2017, to $2 billion compared to $1.8 billion in 2016. “For the third year in a row Nova Scotia is Canada’s number one exporter of seafood,” said Mr. Colwell. “Thanks to the hard work of industry, and our focus on innovation and quality, the seafood industry is helping to build a secure economic future for our coastal and rural communities.” Lobster was once again the top export in 2017 at $947 million, followed by crab at $314 million, scallops at $144 million and shrimp at $126 million. The United States remains the largest market for exports at $955 million, with China in second place at $387 million and the European Union in third at $207 million. This year’s conference will focus on sustainable growth of the industry through continuous improvement of techniques and equipment. It features guest speakers from around the world on supply chain management, brand development and media strategy. A trade show includes more than 40 industry exhibitors. “I think this conference will be topical and informative for everyone who participates,” said Leo Muise, executive director of the Nova Scotia Seafood Alliance. One killed 5 injured in Tissamaharama
