FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Kaylyn Shepherd and Stephen F. Austin’s Kassidy Wilbur are the Southland Conference Softball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Shepherd was a catalyst for Central Arkansas (17-16, 4-5 SLC), who recorded a perfect 5-0 record on the week, including an 8-5 win on the road over Baylor. UCA continued their momentum into three-game series sweep over Incarnate Word where Shepherd brought in nine of her 11 RBI on the week. The junior slugger tabbed a .600 average at the plate for the week in addition to a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .682 on-base mark. The award is her first of the season.Wilbur has been impressive for the Ladyjacks (18-13, 6-3 SLC), as her latest award marks her third of the season. The freshman righty appeared in three of SFA’s four games for the week and delivered a 2-1 record in addition to a 0.86 earned run average. Wilbur opened her week with 10.1 innings at Texas A&M, where the Ladyjacks narrowly fell 2-0 in a 15-inning marathon contest. The Bridge City, Texas, product then went on to bookend Stephen F. Austin’s series against Houston Baptist where she pushed the Ladyjacks to a 5-3 win in game one before dealing a 3-0 complete game shutout in game three.Softball Hitter of the Week – Kaylyn Shepherd, Central Arkansas – 1B – Jr. – Mechanicsville, Va.In easily the best week for a UCA hitter all season long, Shepherd stood out among the rest. The junior recorded 11 RBI, seven extra-base hits and reached base 15 times within a five-game span. Shepherd currently leads the Bears in batting average (.413) and was the key player for the Central Arkansas team that completed a perfect 5-0 spring break road trip.Honorable Mention: Kali Clement, Nicholls; Justyce McClain, McNeese; Jaquelyn Ramon, Southeastern Louisiana.Softball Pitcher of the Week – Kassidy Wilbur, Stephen F. Austin – Fr. – Bridge City, TexasWilbur had another standout week inside the circle for the Ladyjacks, tossing an impressive 24.1 innings, 23 of which were scoreless, and notching 27 strikeouts. On the road against Texas A&M Wednesday night, Wilbur struckout 10 in relief while facing 42 batters in 10.1 innings. Keeping the Aggies scoreless until the final third of the 15th inning, the freshman was one of the key reasons why the game was the longest (time wise) among all Southland teams this season and the longest game for the Aggies since 1994.Wilbur closed out the week with her fourth complete game shutout of the season, allowing just three hits against Houston Baptist to secure SFA’s second-straight Southland series win.
